Today I watched the animals of Allaire Community Farm open up their hearts to children with special needs. The unconditional acceptance of these animals allowed for barriers to be broken and dreams to come true. As a physical therapist I have been blessed to have witnessed many memorable moments throughout my career. Today was one of them as children hesitantly stepped into the stirrup and with each rocking movement of the horse, became a cowboy of accomplishment. I watched the magic of the farm animals with their unconditional acceptance peel away the introversion and fears, and light up a path of excitement and achievement. I saw children with surgical scars, and wounded egos forget their woes and sit in the saddle with grace and conviction, becoming taller and more confident with each lap around the riding rink. It is opportunities like these that allow families to break away from the everyday needs of doctor appointments, hospital visits, and endless hours of traditional therapies. The farm and all it has to offer brings an experience to the lives of these families that gives them a breath of fresh air and the ability to smile simply by being in an environment that nurtures the heart and energizes the soul.
